Teacher Education Convocation

60th celebration planned for Family Weekend

The 60th UNI Teacher Education Convocation and Celebration is scheduled for the first time during Family Weekend, September 30, 2023.

This special ceremony -- unique to UNI in its scope -- honors pre-service teachers who have met the criteria for acceptance into UNI Teacher Education and their overall commitment to the teaching profession.

Two sessions are planned at 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. in Lang Hall, with early childhood and elementary education majors urged to attend the earlier session and all other teaching majors invited to join in the second session. Students may invite two guests to accompany them in Lang Hall, with additional viewing via live streaming in Maucker Union. A light reception will be held outside on Lang Lawn in between ceremonies.

This year's program features Dean Colleen S. Mulholland, UNI College of Education, as guest speaker. Students will be recognized as they walk the stage and receive the traditional commemorative pin as they celebrate this milestone in their journey.

This event, an ongoing reflection of the legacy of generations of graduates from Iowa's leading undergraduate teaching program, was last held in spring 2022.

The Celebration Returns

The tradition of the Teacher Education Convocation and Celebration paused during COVID-19, but was renewed with great anticipation in April 2022. Bailey Leitner,  an elementary education major who attended, noted: “The keynote speaker kept saying that we’re the ones as teachers that are going to be making a difference. Some people say that, but they don’t always treat teachers that way. So it’s nice that we had this chance to actually be recognized—just us—and made a big deal out of.”
