Facilities and Services
Quality in teacher education at UNI extends to the setting and services you’ll become very familiar with at UNI. A few examples:
- State-of-the-art Schindler Education Center, home of the College of Education
- Instructional Resources and Technology Services (IRTS), which serves as a hub for PreK-12 curriculum resources, technology and more
- Yager Science Education Resources and Outreach center, providing science education resources for students, faculty, staff and practicing teachers
- Wellness and Recreation Center, supporting health education and physical education teaching
- Performing arts spaces for music education
Schindler Education Center
Home to the College of Education, the Schindler Education Center serves about 2,000 teacher education students annually and at some point on their journey.
Opened originally in the 1970s, it was fully renovated in 2017, creating a technology-rich, state-of-the-art facility. It includes:
- 200-seat Budke Auditorium
- Multimedia Computer Assisted Teaching (CAT) classroom
- R.J. McElroy Trust DaVinci Classrooms 1 and 2
- Regents’ Center for Early Childhood Development model early childhood classroom
- COE Advising and Teacher Education Success Office
- Instructional Resources & Technology Services (IRTS)
With its welcoming G.R.E.A.T. (Gerdin Resource Exchange for the Advancement of Teaching) atrium seating and Gerdin Learning Stairs, students from across campus often find themselves stopping in Schindler.

Getting hands-on
In addition to the multiple spaces within Schindler Education Center, other facilities assist students in getting a hands-on orientation to their area of emphasis:
- Model early childhood classroom, part of the Iowa Regents Center for Early Childhood Development, emphasizing STEM education for our youngest learners
- Child Development Center, a nationally certified child care and instruction resource for UNI students, faculty and staff
Spaces to learn
In addition to the Yager Science Education Resources and Outreach center, facilities around campus support the secondary teacher education experience. This includes:
- Wellness & Recreation Center, which supports physical education teaching, research and outreach
- Rehearsal, performing and recording spaces, part of the School of Music, in Russell Hall and Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
- Hands-on opportunities in the industrial arts within the Applied Engineering Building, with a $43.9 million dollar renovation to be completed by fall 2023.
