Substitute Authorization

Substitute Authorization Completion

While a student in the state of Iowa, you are allowed to substitute teach if requirements are met. You may use the following form to request that UNI write an authorization letter that you can submit in place of the required Substitute Authorization Course. To receive this letter, you must satisfy the following:

  • You have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours.

  • You have completed and passed a course in each of the following 4 categories: Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity, and Ethics. View a full list of courses here.

Please also note that the state requires Mandatory Reporter training for substitute teachers. You can view the full BOEE requirements here.

If you have completed these requirements and are interested in substitute teaching, please submit this request form to receive your letter and instructions on how to proceed. If you have any questions, please contact the CATS Office at teachereducation@uni.edu, call 319-273-2265, or stop by the CATS Office, SEC 151.
